Data is throttled when your network data limit is hit. Typically carriers throttle "unlimited" plans at 40 gigs, however these vary by carrier.
Poor Connection/Busy Network
If you have less than 2 bars, you will most likely see a reduction in data speeds. You may notice a "lag" in your browser refresh time or messaging taking a while to send.
If you're in a highly populated area, it is possible to have a congested network. This means you're competing with every other user on the network for top notch speeds. Even if you have full bars, a congested network will slow your speeds.
Too Many Background Apps
Many apps remain open unless you force close them, meaning they are consistently refreshing in the background and eating up data. Despite having full bars and a solid 5G connection, too many apps running in the background can cause data speeds to grind to a stop. It's best practice to force quit apps every so often to maintain working speeds for your network and device.
What's the solution?
Unfortunately there isn't a catch all solution for every instance, but we have suggestions that will most likely help!
Network Reset
Sometimes your phone's setting can get mixed up, causing the need for a network reset. A network reset will reset your wifi AND cellular settings to default. Because of this, all wifi passwords get deleted.
iOS
To reset network settings on your Apple device, navigate to your settings
From your settings, go to General and scroll to the bottom
Select Transfer or Reset iPhone
Select Reset
Select Reset Network Settings
Your phone should then reboot with your network settings reset
Android
Android devices are all a bit different as manufacturer's use different operating systems, so this guide may not be accurate for your device.
Open Settings and Select General Management
Select Reset
Select Reset Network Settings
Once this is done, your Android device's network settings will be returned to factory defaults, and you'll need to restart it to apply the changes. You'll need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi or mobile network and restore any previous Bluetooth connections.
Contact your Carrier
A network reset is not always the solution, but is often advised as a first step in troubleshooting. If a network reset does not solve your data connection issues, it is time to contact your carrier.
